Background
Mission Statement
The Ontario Public Works Association promotes professional excellence and public awareness through education, advocacy and the exchange of knowledge regarding public works in Ontario.
Who We Are
The Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) is a non-profit diverse organization of public works practitioners. Our organization is a Chapter of the Canadian Public Works Association (CPWA) and the American Public Works Association (APWA). Our membership consists of approximately 520 public works practitioners employed by the provincial government, municipalities, consulting engineers and suppliers. We are the third largest Chapter within the American Public Works Association, and consistently among the Chapter leaders in growth. Our membership has the broadest range of interest and expertise in the public works industry.
APWA represents approximately 26,000 throughout North America. In the United States, the APWA offices in Kansas City and Washington are the voice of public works. Economic Contribution to Ontario
Our public sector members are generally employed by Ontario's municipalities, representing greater than 90% of the population. Our private sector members directly employ approximately 20,000 professional and high-skilled positions.
Collectively, we represent more than 45 years of participation in the growth of Ontario's economy by building and operating infrastructure across the Province. Our work has direct social and economic impact on the well being of the people of Ontario.
Key Activities
One of the strategic objectives of the Association is to Liaise with Federal and Provincial Ministries on public works and infrastructure matters.
The OPWA also partners regularly with other associations, such as the CPWA, Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO), Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA), Municipal Waste Integration network (MWIN), National Research Council (NRA), and many others.
OPWA provides our members with advocacy, awareness, education and training through:- Assisting in the development of Best Practices through the National Guide for Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure and the Ontario Centre for Best Practices;
- Sponsoring training seminars and teleconferences;
- Participating in the APWA National Congress and the Annual Snow Conference;
- Promoting Nation Public Works Week, held the third week of May every year
- Sponsoring public works expositions
- Providing networking opportunities through our various events
